Becoming Healthier Post-Lockdown (Older Adults)

The past few months have been eventful, to say the least. Being at home has had a big impact on our lifestyles and on our health. As we are entering a new phase of lockdown, many are starting to go for walks and to meet up with friends (with social-distancing measures).

During the lockdown, we have all adjusted to staying indoors, we are now all re-adjusting back to normal. With a lack of movement and fresh air, our health has slightly deteriorated. As life is starting to get back to normal, we must revitalise our health!

But how can we adapt back to normal? We are used to staying indoors.

Here in this blog, we have compiled a list of the things that you can do to get your health back and re-adjust back to how things were.

Get your body active

Being indoors for this long has led to many feeling sluggish, and stiff. Exercise promotes weight loss, muscle flexibility and reduces the risk of conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. With lockdown taking a toll on our physical health, we must get our strength back. And there are many ways in which you can do so.

Go for a walk

Summer is just around the corner, so there are more than enough reasons to go for a walk. Going on a daily walk can strengthen your bones, improve your stability and balance (decreasing the likelihood of falling), and even increase your confidence and mood.

There are many beautiful parks and fields amongst the country that are perfect for a nice, sunny afternoon walk. Making walking a habit would be a decision you wouldn’t regret.

Home Workouts

With lockdown restrictions still being enacted, we recommend doing exercise indoors. Home Workouts are a great way to get into shape without needing any fancy equipment or gym membership.

We have a guide written on Home Workouts and the different exercises you can do at home to keep you in shape. Click Here to check it out.

Seated Home Workouts

For those who don’t feel comfortable doing these exercises, or feel like they’re pushing you too much, we have an alternative. Seated Home Workouts are brilliant for those who need somewhere to start off.

With less energy and motivation required, this could be a great way to get you back into shape and can prepare you for getting involved in traditional exercise. We also have a written, in-depth guide on Seated Home Workouts, Click Here to check it out.

Improve your diet

Lockdown has affected all our diets, with convenience being more important than anything else. Some ingredients have been out of stock at the store and many have opted for ready-meals and snacks rather than healthy, nutritious meals.

With these issues now fading, you should now be working on improving your diet. There are many ways in which you can do so. Cut out unnecessary calories and try to eat natural, more organic foods such as fruits and vegetables.

What about Alcohol?

If you have been drinking in Lockdown, we recommend reducing your intake of alcohol in the coming weeks. If you feel comfortable enough, cut it out completely. Alcohol can increase the chances of you having high blood pressure, a stroke or cancer.

Drink more water

Drinking more water has many health benefits. As well as improving skin health, water helps to cushion many sensitive tissues in the body, such as the brain or the spinal cord.

It can help to regulate body temperature, keeping you at a normal heat, and also maintain blood pressure (which can be a problem with older adults). It also helps to flush out any unwanted chemicals and waste in the body, which is ideal for post-lockdown.

What else can I do to stay healthy?

The points above are designed to improve your health, but there are many other things that you can do too.
