Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and how to manage it

[Updated 7th October 2020]

Carpal Tunnel syndrome is a condition that affects the nerves in the hand. In this condition, the median nerve is squeezed as it passes through the wrist. The median nerve is responsible for controlling some of the muscles of the thumb and also the sensation and feeling in your thumb and fingers.

When this nerve is squeezed in this way it can cause much discomfort to the sufferer ranging from mild tingling or aching through to pain and loss of grip strength.

Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome are quite varied, which can often cause confusion in diagnosing the condition. Ranging from mild discomfort to outright pain, two individuals may both have the condition but have varied ways in which it manifests. This is due in part to both the severity of the condition and the natural differences between how two different individuals brains process the signals sent from the effected median nerve.

Common Symptoms Include:

  • Tingling
  • Aching
  • Numbness
  • Pain
  • Loss of grip strength

In addition to this, and to make matters more complicated, the symptoms will tend to come and go over time. Sometimes being severe enough to wake the patient from deep sleep, while at other times being mild enough that a person with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome forgets they have the condition.

How Carpal Tunnel Syndrome develops over time

Worsen with Time

Gradually, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome develops in severity of discomfort over time.

Persist with Time

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome more often than not becomes more persistent over time.

Worse at Night

Many with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome report symptoms being worse at night.

During times when you do experience increased discomfort, you can generally be sure it is down to one or more of:

  • Poor Posture - Which can exert additional pressure on the nerve
  • Positioning - Moving the wrist into the wrong position can suddenly aggravate the nerve
  • Insufficient Rest - Tiredness, including repetitive movements can lead to increased pain

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome sufferers often find the symptoms can wake them up in the night, and that they have symptoms which are present first thing in the morning.

"If your symptoms exhibit similar traits to the above, you may find that hanging the hand off the bed at night or wearing a sturdy wrist brace to sleep in will often relieve night-time symptoms"

Living with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Symptoms may not be noticeable during the day, while strenuous or repetitive activities may cause them to flare up.

Typing, driving and housework are normal culprits, as are activities in a job which are repetitive or prolonged. Such as pneumatic drills and floor cleaners.

Symptoms which have been present for a while may transfer pain and aching to the arm, shoulder and neck.

Occasionally, your hands may feel weak, and you may lose your grip and drop things.

"At first my hand and wrist were just sore after a long day of typing, then I got tingling and then I used to wake up with a dead hand. That's when I knew I had to wear a brace and start dealing with the problem"
